Serendipity isn’t only a beautiful word, it is a very beautiful thing.
The word is derived from an old Persian fairy tale called, The Three Princes of Serendip. In this fairy tale, the three Princes are constantly making discoveries and coming across things they never set out to find.
Penicillin, nylon, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Velcro and so many other scientific and discovery milestones - all were revealed by accident. Happy accidents happen every day. And that’s what serendipity is all about, the effect of accidentally discovering something when looking for something else.
Serendipity comes into play only when we recognise the unexpected gains and gifts from chance discovery. It takes intelligence, insight and creativity to recognise, “I found what I wasn’t looking for!” And know what to do next.
